Highway Thru Hell season 3 premieres Sept. 2 on Discovery

From a media release:

  • –Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue maintains operations in B.C., while expanding into Alberta to service the infamous highways through the oil patch
  • “The Coquihalla Experience” puts viewers in the driver’s seat for an interactive immersion at Discovery.ca

When it comes to wicked weather and wild wrecks, there’s only one other highway system that rivals B.C.’s Coquihalla. As HIGHWAY THRU HELL returns to Discovery for Season 3, premiering Tuesday, September 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue moves into Alberta to tackle Highways 881 and 63, basing a second operation out of Lac La Biche – while maintaining Davis’ decade-old business in Hope, B.C. Two provinces, two teams, new crew, old rivals, more trust, more friction, and vastly different types of weather and crash conditions – this hellish third season of the original Canadian hit series from Vancouver’s Great Pacific TV is the most epic season yet.

Back with 13 new episodes, HIGHWAY THRU HELL travels some of the most economically vital – and most inhospitable – trucking routes in North America. Plagued by winter storms, truckers spin out and smash up, and heavy rescue teams hustle to clear the highway carnage and get the road open again. These highway heroes are a hit with viewers –Season 2 of HIGHWAY THRU HELL was #1 in its timeslot on Canadian entertainment specialty television among all key adult and male demos, and was the #3 Canadian entertainment specialty program among Adults 25-54 and 18-49 overall. The 2012 debut still ranks as the #1 series premiere in Discovery’s history*.

Changes and challenges mark every moment of Season 3. Last season, Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue lost a significant amount of business when a new competitor has scooped up half the recoveries, forcing Davis to seek new opportunities to off-set these restrictions. Gambling big, Davis rolls into northern Alberta’s booming oil patch to stake a new claim on another road worthy of the title “highway thru hell.”

Highway 881 runs north 300 kilometers through remote forest, muskeg, and tundra between Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray. But it’s the only route into newly-discovered oil and gas fields, worth billions of dollars. On a route supplying more energy to the U.S. than Saudi Arabia, hundreds of millions of dollars of heavy equipment must be moved daily on this narrow, two-lane highway. Almost 60,000 shift workers are in camps serviced by Highway 881, and on shift-change day, thousands of workers need to get home. Davis sends his best drivers and trucks to the Alberta oil patch; he tasks Adam Gazzola to manage the new Alberta startup. His crew includes Colin McLean, a city driver fresh from Vancouver who has to earn Gazzola’s respect. Deep snow, bitter cold, and big recoveries that dwarf most loads in B.C. push Gazzola’s team to the limit.

Back in B.C., Davis faces more challenges. During the heaviest snowfall and worst avalanche conditions in decades, he’s left with a skeleton crew of new hires and old trucks in his battle to keep the Coquihalla Highway open. New drivers include Howie Irwin, a highly-skilled heavy recovery vet who used to work the Coq for Davis and his brother before buying his own truck and moving to the city; and Don Starr, a 20-year mountain veteran with MacGyver-like ingenuity. But Davis isn’t the only guy on the road. With Davis’ team stretched across two provinces, rival rescue operator Al Quiring steps into the void. For years, Davis and Quiring have gone “tow to tow” for the title of “King of the Coq”. And like Davis has done with this stepson Brandon, Quiring is teaching the family trade to the next generation, his son Cary by his side. These young bucks have a lot to prove. Brandon is setting his sights on the Alberta operation, but must first show Davis that he has what it takes at home in B.C. Brandon attends a “wreckmaster heavy rescue bootcamp,” and this season Davis offers Brandon the chance to patrol in the quick response truck, aimed at securing accident scenes for heavy rescue… before the competition.

Highlights from the first episodes of HIGHWAY THRU HELL, Season 3, include:

HIGHWAY THRU HELL: “New Hell Old Hell”
Tuesday, September 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT
A new winter season starts with Jamie Davis Heavy Rescue split in two… Adam Gazzola has taken half the fleet north to Alberta’s rich and dangerous oil fields while Jamie Davis stays back to fight and keep the Coq open all by himself.

HIGHWAY THRU HELL: “New Hope”
Tuesday, September 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT
Jamie Davis realizes he can’t do it all alone in B.C. and hires a new driver. But the newest addition ends up needing rescuing himself after he crashes Bruce Hardy’s legendary blue truck. Davis’ stepson Brandon is forced to prove himself after his plans to join the Alberta team are put on hold. And rookie operator, Colin McLean, learns just how tough his new boss Adam Gazzola can be… when a seemingly simple job goes sideways.

When “closure is not an option,” Davis’ teams struggle to make a go of it as the season continues. In Alberta, the crew must sleep in their trucks when they can’t find homes to rent, face the bitter cold of an Alberta winter, and endure the pain and heartache of leaving family behind. In B.C., 300 centimetres of snow falls in February, creating the worst avalanche conditions on the Coq in its 27-year history, which Davis must tackle with his newest crew and oldest trucks. At the end of the season, Davis faces the ultimate decision: should he throw all his resources into his new Alberta business, or rebuild his B.C. operations and wage a renewed battle on the Coq?

City announces Fall 2014 premiere dates

citytv

From a media release:

Heading into another stellar season on City, the network announced today its fall 2014 premiere dates for four new and 16 returning hit series, and two nights of NHL action. As the destination for the most buzzed-about comedies and reality shows, daring dramas, and live events, plus new NHL game coverage this season, City delivers the most diverse schedule of fresh new series and proven fan favourites this fall, beginning Sunday, Sept. 7.

Utopia kicks off City’s fall schedule on Sunday, Sept. 7 with a special two-hour episode, the first of a three-night series premiere. From unscripted mastermind John de Mol (The Voice), and based on the hit Dutch television series of the same name, comes television’s biggest social experiment to date. For one full year, 15 pioneering individuals leave their everyday lives and move to an isolated, undeveloped location where they are challenged to create their own civilization from scratch.

Anchoring City’s solid Monday lineup of 2 Broke Girls and Mom comes the new adrenaline-filled dramedy Scorpion, starring Elyes Gabel (World War Z, Game of Thrones) and Katharine McPhee (Smash, American Idol). Inspired by a true story, Walter O’Brien (Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits become Homeland Security’s new Think Tank, helping to solve the nation’s crises.

Following critical darling Modern Family on Wednesday nights is freshman comedy Black-ish, starring Anthony Anderson (Guys With Kids), Laurence Fishburne (Hannibal), and Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends). The series centers around Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson (Anderson), who feels as though his success has brought too much assimilation upon his black family.

Delivering high-octane sports programming every Saturday and Sunday night, City proudly welcomes live NHL coverage to its prime-time lineup beginning Saturday, Oct. 11 with Hockey Night in Canada, hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos and featuring Ron MacLean and Don Cherry on Coach’s Corner. Sunday nights bring a new Canadian tradition to City with Rogers Hometown Hockey, the newest national night on the NHL schedule, hosted each week by Ron MacLean from a different community in various hometowns across Canada. In the first edition on Sunday, Oct. 12, MacLean is live from London, ON, as the Maple Leafs hit the Big Apple to take on Henrik Lundqvist and the Stanley Cup finalist New York Rangers. Twenty-four of the 25 Rogers Hometown Hockey broadcasts will feature a Canadian NHL team in action, and each week’s broadcast will feature local NHL player profiles, grassroots stories, and local entertainment features.

Joining City’s dramas and comedies this fall comes the television event of the season, Peter Pan Live!, the musical production of the beloved story of Peter Pan, played by Allison Williams (Girls), and starring Christopher Walken (Seven Psychopaths) as Captain Hook. Plus, City will carry a special live broadcast of the Canadian Concert for Human Rights, featuring performances by some of Canada’s top musical talent, in celebration of the grand opening of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg. Returning television events include The 48th Annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, GRAMMY® Nominations Concert Live!, and CMA Country Christmas.

Also this fall, smash-hit comedies 2 Broke Girls and Two and a Half Men keep the laughs coming every night, airing back to back in strip, beginning Monday, Sept. 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT (check local listings).

In this new series, HGTV Canada’s rising star Sebastian Clovis rescues homeowners struggling with DIY projects to make their homes the highlight of the neighbourhood. After retirement in 2008, he returned to the job that allows him to bring his physical and creative A-game every day: construction and design. He treats every reno like a championship game and plays hard with the homeowners that need his help.

From a media release:

  • Brand new live-action Family Mystery Series from the Producers of Degrassi, and developed in association with marblemedia
  • Ramona Barckert (2014 Canadian Screen Award winner) is Showrunner and Writer

Three-time Emmy®-nominated production company Epitome Pictures (Degrassi, Instant Star, The L.A. Complex), a DHX Media company, is starting production today on OPEN HEART a new original teen, live-action drama series. The 12 x 30-minute series was commissioned by YTV and TeenNick and is developed in association with marblemedia.

Exciting newcomer Karis Cameron stars as lead character Dylan Blake with the series also starring Tori Anderson, Justin Kelly, Cristine Prosperi, Kevin McGarry, Patrick Kwok-Choon, Jenny Cooper, Demore Barnes, Jeff Douglas, Elena Juatco, Mena Massoud, and Dylan Everett. The family mystery series will shoot this August through October in Toronto. DHX Media will handle worldwide distribution for the show.

OPEN HEART is a gripping mystery series, folded into a sprawling family saga, set against the high-stakes workplace and relationship drama of a hospital. Dylan Blake, the rebellious daughter of a fractured family of doctors, uses her stint as a youth hospital volunteer to secretly investigate the mysterious disappearance of her father. OPEN HEART is being produced with the financial participation of the Shaw Rocket Fund, the Cogeco Program Development Fund, Bell Fund and RBC Royal Bank.

The series stars:

  • Karis Cameron (Signed, Sealed, Delivered; The Haunting Hour) as Dylan Blake, the gutsy and headstrong heroine who is determined to unravel the mystery that plagues the halls of Open Heart Memorial
  • Tori Anderson (The L.A. Complex, Warehouse 13, Flashpoint) as Dr. London Blake, Dylan’s brainy older sister and first-year resident
  • Justin Kelly (Degrassi, Lost Girl, Latest Buzz) as Wes Silver, the cool and playful charmer, with a smart mouth that gets him out of trouble just as often as it gets him into it
  • Cristine Prosperi (Degrassi, Nicky Deuce) as Mikayla Walker, the bright and bubbly ally to Dylan who distracts herself with all the hospital’s social drama
  • Kevin McGarry (Being Erica, Saw 7) as Dr. Timothy “Hud” Hudson, the first-year medical resident and rugged bad boy of Open Heart Memorial
  • Patrick Kwok-Choon (Nikita, Rookie Blue, Being Erica) as Seth Park, loveable hipster-nerd lab tech, whose knowledge of biochemistry is exceeded only by his collection of indie novels and ironic t-shirts
  • Jenny Cooper (Hemlock Grove, Scandal, NCIS, C.S.I. Miami, 24) as Dr. Jane Blake, mother to Dylan and London, and the leading trauma doctor who would rather save lives than deal with her own family affairs
  • Demore Barnes (Hemlock Grove, The Listener, Flashpoint) as Dr. Dominic Karamichaelidis, the handsome attending emergency physician and resident advisor who doesn’t mind being the bad guy if it means saving lives
  • Elena Juatco (Repo! The Genetic Opera, Breaking the Rules, Sorority Surrogate) as Scarlet, the first-year medical resident, whose stunning beauty often leaves her razor sharp medical skills underestimated by others
  • Mena Massoud (King, Combat Hospital, Poser) as Jared, the snarky and upfront head of the youth volunteer program who plays by the rules and relishes the marginal authority his position gives him
  • Dylan Everett (Degrassi, Wingin’ It, The Unauthorized Saved By The Bell Story) as Teddy, Dylan’s old friend – a bored rich kid and a very bad influence.

OPEN HEART is executive produced by Linda Schuyler and Stephen Stohn, Ramona Barckert, Matt Hornburg and Mark Bishop. The series is developed in association with marblemedia, which is also taking the lead in producing a fully integrated interactive digital component to the series. Directors are Stefan Brogren and Samir Rehem. Writers include Ramona Barckert, Chris Pozzebon, Scott Oleszkowicz, Brendan Gall, Brendon Yorke and Barbara Haynes. TV, eh? to rise from the dead

I’m teaming up with former TV Guide Canada critic Greg David to revive the site in early August with a focus on more original interviews, reviews and features. We’re looking for ways to make it financially sustainable and an Indigogo campaign is step one. Our stretch goal is $5000 but the more we raise, the more we can continue with original content while we look for stable funding.
