Junior hockey among stiff competition for January premieres

From Bill Brioux of the Canadian Press:

  • Will junior hockey once again crush other TV shows in the ratings?
“The tourney has other Canadian broadcasters tinkering with early January schedules. CBC had originally picked Jan. 5 as the start date for the second season of its Newfoundland-based detective series “Republic of Doyle.” That’s now been pushed back a week to Jan. 12. History Television had the second season of its top-rated reality series “Ice Pilots NWT” taking off the same night, along with a new “Ice Road Truckers” series “IRT: Deadliest Roads.” Both swerved out of the way of the hockey championships, with the new premieres set back a week until Jan. 12.” Read more.

Republic of Doyle and Lost Girl among the classy class of 2010

From Rob Salem of the Toronto Star:

  • The Class (and trash) of 2010
“Though you cannot beat the hilarious father/son sniping between Alan Hawco and TV dad Sean McGinley on the CBC hit, Republic of Doyle. … The also locally-produced new Lost Girl, generally dismissed as a dark-side Buffy, has turned out to be so much more, adding a cheeky gal-pal spin that the relentlessly dour Nikita might do well to consider.” Read more.

Episode 21: Listen or download here or subscribe via iTunes or with any other program via the TV, Eh? feed

Anthony and Diane start with a tribute to the amazing career of Leslie Nielsen. Then it’s a recap CBC’s revised winter schedule, which moves Republic of Doyle out of the way of the World Junior Hockey Championships but not 18 to Life, Little Mosque on the Prairie, or Village on a Diet. CBC’s holiday specials include many of their scripted shows but their PR as usual conspicuously avoids mention of 22 Minutes, who have been pumping out newsworthy and well-watched episodes lately. We mock the holiday schedule of CTV for being more a collection of stuff they’re throwing on the air.

Anthony rants about MuchMusic’s thwarted desire to play homeopathic levels of music videos, and also about the comparatively high cost of content in Canada. Diane pretends to listen, as usual.

Republic of Doyle season 2 premieres January 12 on CBC

From a media release – note the change of premiere date from the original announcement:

REPUBLIC OF DOYLE

  • Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. on CBC Television
  • Beginning January 12

The cast of Republic of Doyle Season Two(3)Rumrunners and drug dealers, gorgeous girls with amnesia or stolen chip trucks, racehorses or fiancées – there’s always something intriguing going on in the Republic. Private Eye Jake Doyle returns for a raucous second season of CBC’s REPUBLIC OF DOYLE, solving cases, dodging punches and chasing criminals through the hilly, colourful streets of seaside St. John’s.

Season One of REPUBLIC OF DOYLE saw Jake proving himself to be a top-notch, gut instinct, rogue kind of a P.I. Season Two continues to deliver and entertain with killer cases from uncommon clients -– complete with all the laughs, fistfights, car chases, lager and family skirmishes that viewers have come to expect from any episode of this one-of-a-kind series.

So what lies ahead for the Doyles as they all face Mal’s mortality? Will Christian return and better yet, what will happen if he does? Can Jake clear him? And are Jake and Leslie really over? Is “The One” for Jake gone for good?

REPUBLIC OF DOYLE stars Allan Hawco as the charming and irreverent detective who struggles daily to navigate the complications of running the family P.I. business while keeping his very tangly private life in check.

Also returning to the Republic are the people that Jake can’t live with — or without: colleague (and defacto stepmother) Rose Miller (Lynda Boyd); vandal turned P.I. apprentice Des Courtney (Mark O’Brien); and enterprising niece Tinny (Marthe Bernard).

But the return of one Doyle remains uncertain. After a couple of massive back-to-back heart attacks and emergency surgery, what has become of Malachy Doyle (Sean McGinley)…and how are the Doyles moving forward?
