TV Eh B Cs podcast 16 – Hart Hanson Rolls the Bones

HartHansonBorn in the USA and raised in Canada, Hart Hanson abandoned his dreams of being a guitar god, and graduated from University College, University of Toronto, with a degree in English and Political Theory. He decided to kickstart a writing career by riding his bicycle across Canada, documenting his adventures for the Toronto Sunday Sun.

Hanson wrote for a number of Canadian television programs, including The Black Stallion, Neon Rider, Northwood, The Odyssey, Outer Limits, Poltergeist, Road to Avonlea and the series Ready or Not, for which he received his first Gemini (Canadian Emmy) nomination.

Hanson wrote the pilot for Traders, which was picked up by the Global Television Network and ran for five years, winning many Geminis, including “Best Writing” for Hanson.

Hanson and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he worked on the short-lived series Cupid as a Supervising Producer, then as Co-Executive Producer on the even-shorter-lived series Snoops. He moved to Twentieth Century Fox and worked on the series Judging Amy for three seasons, rising to executive producer. He also helped launch the series Joan of Arcadia, and eventually wrote the pilot for what is now a decade-long run of Bones on FOX.

His newest series Backstrom premiered on FOX in January.

The bulk of this week’s show featured Diane, Anthony and Greg breaking down the major points of the CRTC’s latest decision regarding the future of Canadian TV. (Special kudos to Kelly Lynne Ashton for her easy-to-understand breakdown of the decisions: you can find the links to them in this week’s He Said/She Said column.)

Also on tap: a chat about Chris Haddock’s return to the CBC with The Romeo Section and the Canada-Brazil co-production Rio Heat, which we kinda hope is so bad it’s good.

812531_drfraserhealeyPatrick began his acting career with Toronto’s famous Second City Theatre Company. Then he took to the road as a Stand Up comedian headlining in Universities and clubs throughout North America.

Eventually, episodic television beckoned. First with the hilarious Red Green Show with fifteen seasons as the loveable, nerdy, techno-geek, Harold; while simultaneously performing five seasons in the acclaimed dramatic series TRADERS. Variety newspaper noted, Mr. McKenna “has made television history” by being awarded Gemini’s for both the “Best performance by a Lead Actor in a Comedic Series” and “Best performance by a Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series” in the same year on the same night.

Currently Patrick co-stars in two new hospital series, HARD ROCK MEDICAL for TVO and APTN as well as Global Televisions newest hit drama, REMEDY. With any remaining free time, Patrick continues to guest star in several dramatic and comedic series from MURDOCH MYSTERIES to THE MERCER REPORT and has recently entered the world of cartoons; lending his voice to no less than five regular animated series.

Next you can see Patrick star in the soon to be released feature films A MASKED SAINT and MARGARITA.

TV, eh? podcast episode 177 – All Your Spoiler Alerts Belong To Us

Diane, Anthony and Greg recap this year’s Canadian Screen Awards, and while we’re fine with who walked away with trophies, we had a lot of criticism aimed at CBC for some extra categories and the decision to tape-delay the celebration.

Other topics covered this week include the cancellation of Strange Empire, the ongoing battle between the CRTC and Bell Media over the Super Bowl and simsub. Finally, our latest poll asks for input regarding what Canadian literature should be adapted by the CBC for their next project.
